Windsor is a Canadian town located in Hants County, Nova Scotia. It is a service centre for the western part of the county and is situated on Highway 101.

The town has a history dating back to its use by the Mi’kmaq Nation for several millennia prior to European discovery. When the Acadians lived in the area, the town was raided by New England forces in 1704. The area was central to both Father Le Loutre’s War and the Expulsion of the Acadians during the Bay of Fundy Campaign in 1755. The town promotes itself as the birthplace of ice hockey and was the home of Canada’s first internationally best-selling author, Thomas Chandler Haliburton.

History

Having migrated from Port Royal, Nova Scotia, the Acadians were the first to settle in Pisiguit by the early 1680s. French census records dated 1686 list well established farms utilizing dyked marshlands.

Queen Anne’s War

Raid on Pisiquid (1704)

During Queen Anne’s War, in response to the Wabanaki Confederacy of Acadia military campaign against the New England frontier and the Canadian Raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, Benjamin Church led the Raid on Pisiquid (1704) and burned the village to the ground. In the Raid on Pisiquid, Church burned 40 houses along with out-buildings, crops and cattle. Pierre, an Acadian of French Huguenot and English extraction, had arrived in Port Royal with Sir Thomas Temple in the 1650s when Acadia was under English control. The fertility of the soils and wealth of other resources in the area had been known to the French since the early part of the century when Samuel de Champlain, de Mont’s cartographer, had surveyed the region. Earlier wharves have disappeared and only pleasure craft now use the tiny harbour. At low tide columnar basalt lava is revealed on the rock and cobble beach. These columnar basalts were formed during volcanic activity of the Fundy Basin about 201 million years ago. A waterfall is located on the south end of the beach.
“,”display_subtext”:”Wenega Rd・1,344 people checked in here”,”fan_count”:82,”overall_star_rating”:5},{“id”:”138716169486689″,”name”:”Raymond Field”,”location”:{“city”:”Wolfville”,”country”:”Canada”,”latitude”:45.092081,”longitude”:-64.367416,”state”:”NS”,”street”:”550 Main St”},”link”:”https://www.facebook.com/pages/Raymond-Field/138716169486689″,”single_line_address”:”550 Main St, Wolfville, Nova Scotia”,”category”:”Stadium, Arena & Sports Venue”,”category_list”:[{“id”:”109976259083543″,”name”:”Stadium, Arena & Sports Venue”},{“id”:”179943432047564″,”name”:”Performance & Event Venue”}],”description”:”Raymond Field is a multi-purpose stadium in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
